Can you describe your role at Audible and what inspires you in it?
I’m part of Audible’s Global Media team. We work with our 11 marketplaces around the world and with media companies to find meaningful ways to connect with prospective customers, as well as current Audible members. I’m inspired by the impact that spoken word content can have in enhancing lives. After I gave birth to my firstborn, I struggled a bit, like a lot of mothers do. I found a few audiobooks that really helped me make sense of what I was experiencing. It was truly a lifeline.
What has your career journey at Audible been like so far?
I started here five years ago to help launch Audible Latino, a program that creates in-language and in-culture content and marketing for our Hispanic audience in the US. I led media strategy across TV, radio, social, search, and display. I also had the opportunity to work on other areas of the business, like creative, content, and SEO, to name a few; this afforded me a holistic view and made me a more well-rounded marketer.
How do Audible’s People Principles influence your day-to-day work?
“Activate Caring” is a People Principle I try to deliver on every day. I do this by being collaborative with team members as well as media partners. I also “Study and Draw Inspiration from Culture and Technology” through social media, the perfect place to learn about new trends, new content, and issues that are important to society at large.
Do you recall your first Audible listen?
The Mother of Black Hollywood by Jenifer Lewis. Jenifer Lewis has graced so many stages as a comedian, dancer, singer, and actress. She has lived such an inspired life, so when I learned she was releasing a memoir, I was really excited to listen. And it did not disappoint. Jenifer’s retelling of her rise in Hollywood, as well as her struggles, was truly moving.
Tell us about Audible’s employee-led impact group Unidos.
My colleagues and I founded Unidos to create a community for Latino and Hispanic employees, help inform business decisions concerning our Latino audiences, and elevate our creator community. Our mission is, officially: Unidos is dedicated to leveraging Audible’s footprint in Newark and beyond to positively affect lives and amplify the voices of Latino/Hispanic employees, creators, and community. I am on the marketing events committee responsible for planning and executing employee-facing events like author interviews and social gatherings.
Other than the people, what do you love most about the culture here?
I enjoy the entrepreneurial spirit. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing leaders who have taken the time to coach me on so many aspects of my career.
What are some employee benefits that have been invaluable for you?
Live Local is an amazing program that offers Audible employees $500 a month towards their rent if they live in the city of Newark. This has been an invaluable benefit for my family, and it reinforces Audible’s commitment to growing the innovation economy in Newark and revitalizing the city as a hub for tech entrepreneurs.
What’s a quality that someone interested in working on your team needs in order to be successful?
Being data-driven. It allows us to validate (or not) assumptions in order to make the best decisions for our customer. And for anyone considering Audible, being Customer Obsessed (which is another Audible People Principle) is paramount.
What are you listening to?
David Goggins’ Can’t Hurt Me and Never Finished. David Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL and ultra-marathoner who overcame a lot of adversity and trauma. He has a no-holds-barred approach in sharing techniques on how to master the mind and become the best version of oneself.
