Audible Sound Bites with
Roopa Sharma
Roopa Sharma, Audible’s Director of Brand and Content Marketing, works on attention-grabbing campaigns that inspire people all over the world to engage their imaginations with Audible. Working from our Singapore hub, she and her team get to work with talented creators throughout Asia to show potential customers how their days can be made better with listening. “It’s the perfect mix of strategy, creativity and good old intuition,” Roopa says.
What is life like at the hub you are aligned to?
I’m based out of the Singapore hub, located in the Central Business District, surrounded by fantastic hawker centers. My favorite thing to do is to find time every month to go out with some colleagues for a great local meal! Outside of enjoying delicious meals, some of us have also taken up running together, which has been super fun.
How does your job contribute to Audible’s mission to surprise and delight listeners around the world?
My role enables me to create compelling, world-class campaigns that help people discover their next great listen, while also being a driver of culture. We help fuel conversation and community. Our marketing strategy helps serve the customer the right content on the platform that they’re most likely to engage with. We bring innovative and distinctive experiences to our customers, driving a sense of belonging with Audible.
My biggest source of inspiration is the voice of the customer. Listening to people talk about their first life-changing audiobook fuels my drive to bring people the best stories from around the world.
What was your first Audible listen? What inspired you to check it out?
My first Audible listen was Psychology of Money. Despite studying economics and almost becoming a chartered accountant, I wasn’t super smart with money in my twenties. The book helped bring such a step change in my perspective around wealth generation and what constitutes financial freedom and happiness.
Can you share an an example of a time when you received customer feedback that was meaningful to you?
Since I joined Audible in 2022, the consistent feedback I received from Audible users in India was a desire for more payment method flexibility. I’m thrilled to say that we rolled out new ways of purchasing in India in May 2024! I’m excited for customers to be able to sign up faster than ever.
Can you share about a project you moved quickly to make something real?
One mammoth project I worked on was Marvel’s Wastelanders, an epic franchise that launched across five marketplaces, featuring some of their most well-known celebrities. It truly took the commitment of some of the most talented people in the business to meaningfully localize the marketing campaign for five different languages and cultures. The outcome was that the first season of Marvel’s Wastelanders was a successful Audible Original where it launched.
Other than the people, what do you love most about the culture here?
The People Principle of “Activate Caring.” There’s a sense of genuine care, empathy and compassion that I feel both within the organization and in how we show up in our communities and to our customers.
What’s one quality people interested in working in Brand and Content Marketing team need to be successful here?
The constant drive for innovation and creativity. And being the staunchest advocate of the customer.
What advice would you have for a candidate considering Audible?
Bring your most authentic self to your interviews—and after you land that role! Audible celebrates diverse voices and opinions.
What made you choose to work at Audible, and what made you want to stay?
I chose to work at Audible because of its commitment to innovative storytelling, but also the core mission of driving impact through its Activate Caring mission. What made me want to stay was the supportive environment and seeing the impact of my work on listeners.
